Hamburger Steaks – Diner Style
This is a Hamburger Steak, NOT Salisbury Steak – Just pure seasoned Ground Beef, pan-seared, then smothered in a rich onion gravy. It’s old-school, meaty, simple, the way diners make it Difficulty: Easy

Equipment
- Large Skillet
INGREDIENTS
Hamburger Steaks
- 1½ lbs Ground Beef - (80/20)
- Salt & Black Pepper
- ½ tsp. Garlic Powder
- ½ tsp. Onion Powder
- 1 Tbsp. oil
Onion Gravy
- 2 Tbsp Butter
- 1 lg. Onion - thinly sliced
- ¼ tsp. Sugar
- 2 Tbsp. AP Flour
- 2 cups Beef Broth
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
- Salt & Black Pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
- Form the steaks into thick oval patties and season Ground Beef with Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder & Onion Powder.
Sear the Steaks
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
Cook the Onions
- In the same skillet, melt Butter.
- Add Onions and sauté until soft. Very lightly sprinkle with Sugar to aid in caramelizing.
Make the Gravy
- Sprinkle Flour over Onions → stir continuously for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in Beef Broth and Worcestershire.
- Simmer until thick and glossy.
Finish
- Return steaks to the skillet.
- Spoon Onion Gravy over the steaks.
- Simmer 5 minutes until juicy and coated.
- Serve with a side of mashed potatoes.
