Hamburger Steaks – Diner Style

This is a Hamburger Steak, NOT Salisbury Steak – Just pure seasoned Ground Beef, pan-seared, then smothered in a rich onion gravy. It’s old-school, meaty, simple, the way diners make it

Equipment

  • Large Skillet

INGREDIENTS 

Hamburger Steaks

  • lbs Ground Beef - (80/20)
  • Salt & Black Pepper
  • ½ tsp. Garlic Powder
  • ½ tsp. Onion Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. oil

Onion Gravy

  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 lg. Onion - thinly sliced
  • ¼ tsp. Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. AP Flour
  • 2 cups Beef Broth
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
  • Salt & Black Pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Form the steaks into thick oval patties and season Ground Beef with Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder & Onion Powder.

Sear the Steaks

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

Cook the Onions

  • In the same skillet, melt Butter.
  • Add Onions and sauté until soft. Very lightly sprinkle with Sugar to aid in caramelizing.

Make the Gravy

  • Sprinkle Flour over Onions → stir continuously for 1 minute.
  • Slowly whisk in Beef Broth and Worcestershire.
  • Simmer until thick and glossy.

Finish

  • Return steaks to the skillet.
  • Spoon Onion Gravy over the steaks.
  • Simmer 5 minutes until juicy and coated.
  • Serve with a side of mashed potatoes.
