  • 9" x 13" Baking Dish
  • Aluminum Foil to cover in oven

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb Ground Beef - 85/15
  • 4 medium Potatoes - Russet or Yukon gold
  • 1 medium Onion - finely chopped
  • 1 to 2 cups Shredded Cheese - Cheddar or Mozzarella.
  • ½ cup Milk
  • 2 Tbsp. Butter - melted
  • Salt & Pepper - to taste
  • Garlic Powder - to taste
  • Rosemary & Thyme - Finely Chopped for Garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Place the Ground Beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart and cooking for 7 to 10 minutes or until fully browned.
  • While Beef cooks, peel and thinly slice potatoes.
  • When Beef is done, drain any excess fat.
  • Return the skillet with the Beef to medium heat and add Onion. Sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent and fragrant.
  • Add Salt, Pepper, and Garlic Powder, stirring to meld flavors.
  • Layer half of the potatoes into the baking dish and season with Salt and Pepper.
  • Spread the beef-onion mix evenly over the potatoes.
  • Top the meat with the remaining potato slices.
  • In a small bowl whisk together the Milk and melted Butter, and pour over the top layer. Make sure it seeps through.
  • Finish with Shredded Cheese in an even top layer.
  • Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes until the potatoes soften. Remove foil and continue baking for 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Potatoes should then be fork tender
  • Garnish with finely chopped Thyme and Rosemary.
  • Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Freshly shredded Cheese gives a creamier texture.
Use thin Potato Layers to ensure the milk reaches all slices.
For crispy edges, finish under a broiler for 1–2 minutes, monitoring carefully.
