INGREDIENTS
1lbGround Beef - 85/15
4medium Potatoes - Russet or Yukon gold
1mediumOnion - finely chopped
1 to 2cupsShredded Cheese - Cheddar or Mozzarella.
½cupMilk
2Tbsp.Butter - melted
Salt & Pepper - to taste
Garlic Powder - to taste
Rosemary & Thyme - Finely Chopped for Garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Place the Ground Beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart and cooking for 7 to 10 minutes or until fully browned.
While Beef cooks, peel and thinly slice potatoes.
When Beef is done, drain any excess fat.
Return the skillet with the Beef to medium heat and add Onion. Sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent and fragrant.
Add Salt, Pepper, and Garlic Powder, stirring to meld flavors.
Layer half of the potatoes into the baking dish and season with Salt and Pepper.
Spread the beef-onion mix evenly over the potatoes.
Top the meat with the remaining potato slices.
In a small bowl whisk together the Milk and melted Butter, and pour over the top layer. Make sure it seeps through.
Finish with Shredded Cheese in an even top layer.
Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes until the potatoes soften. Remove foil and continue baking for 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Potatoes should then be fork tender
Garnish with finely chopped Thyme and Rosemary.
Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Freshly shredded Cheese gives a creamier texture.Use thin Potato Layers to ensure the milk reaches all slices.For crispy edges, finish under a broiler for 1–2 minutes, monitoring carefully.
